You are invited to a complimentary consultation with Dr. Mahanti. At this appointment, Dr. Mahanti will take some preliminary measurements to see if your vision could be improved with LASIK surgery. He will discuss the procedure, the risks, and the benefits and talk to you about what you should expect from the procedure. Our staff will also explain payment options.
If you wear contact lenses, it is a good idea to stop wearing them before your baseline evaluation and switch to wearing your glasses full-time. Contact lenses change the shape of your cornea for up to several weeks after you have stopped using them depending on the type of contact lenses you wear. Not leaving your contact lenses out long enough for your cornea to assume its natural shape before surgery can have negative consequences. These consequences include inaccurate measurements and a poor surgical plan, resulting in poor vision after surgery. These measurements, which determine how much corneal tissue to remove, may need to be repeated at least a week after your initial evaluation and before surgery to make sure they have not changed, especially if you wear RGP or hard lenses. If you wear:
- soft contact lenses, you should stop wearing them for 2 weeks before your initial evaluation.
- toric soft lenses or rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, you should stop wearing them for at least 3 weeks before your initial evaluation.
- hard lenses, you should stop wearing them for at least 4 weeks before your initial evaluation.
LASIK Exam
The top priority of The Eye & Laser Center is to ensure success for each patient. The Eye & Laser Center is proud of its outcome and happy patients. A major factor in that success is a comprehensive pre- and postoperative care. Your results are as important to us as they are to you.
The Eye & Laser Center's patient care begins with either a complimentary LASIK screening or a comprehensive refractive surgery exam. During the exam several measurements are taken to ensure that the patient is a good candidate for LASIK. The procedure is explained in detail and the goals of each patient are discussed.
Again, it is the goal of The Eye & Laser Center to assure the best possible outcomes. Dr. Mahanti will check your vision the day after the procedure. Additional follow-up exams are done at one week, one month, three months, and six months.
The Process
LASIK is a surgical technique using a cold, concentrated beam of light from an excimer laser to gently reshape the cornea, correcting refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
First, a thin layer of the cornea is lifted up as a instrument called a microkeratome glides across the cornea. Then high energy pulses of light from the Excimer laser reshape the cornea with an accuracy of up to .25 microns. The flap is then repositioned. Because of the cornea's remarkable, natural bonding qualities, healing is rapid and does not require any stitches. The total outpatient procedure is performed in less than 15-20 minutes.
Dr. Mahanti uses three different lasers. The VISX Star S4, the Technolas 217, and Lasersight LSX. He will select the laser that is appropriate for your prescription and eye.
